SearchGPT: OpenAI declares war on Google with new search engine

The company behind ChatGPT, OpenAI, is expanding into search with the launch of SearchGPT, a “prototype” search engine poised to compete with Google’s lucrative business. OpenAI announced that SearchGPT aims to enhance user experience by utilizing generative AI to gather links and answer queries in a conversational tone. This new tool might be integrated into OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT chatbot.

Kayla Wood, a spokesperson for OpenAI, confirmed that unnamed partners and publishers have already accessed SearchGPT, providing feedback that has refined the search engine. However, Wood declined to provide a demo or interview about the new tool for WIRED.

Microsoft and Competitors in AI Search

Microsoft, an investor in OpenAI, released an AI-powered version of Bing in 2023, which used OpenAI’s large language models. This AI search experience, now rebranded as Copilot, faced challenges in gaining significant market share. Other competitors, such as Google and Perplexity, have also launched AI search experiences. Google’s AI Overviews and Perplexity’s chatbot approach are similar to what OpenAI aims to achieve with SearchGPT.

Challenges and Potential of AI Search Engines

OpenAI’s introduction of ChatGPT in November 2022 highlighted the potential for AI to revolutionize web search. However, large language models are not perfect, often producing outdated or fabricated answers. Microsoft’s early Bing AI efforts produced incorrect and inappropriate responses, and Google faced reliability issues with its AI Overviews.

OpenAI’s SearchGPT may use a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) approach to reduce hallucinations by referencing trusted sources while generating responses. This method aims to provide more accurate and reliable answers.

Commitment to Publishers and Potential Copyright Issues

OpenAI has signed licensing agreements with several major publishers, including Vox Media, The Atlantic, News Corp, and the Financial Times, to ensure SearchGPT connects users with reliable information and cites sources prominently. This approach addresses potential copyright concerns raised by other AI search tools like Perplexity.

OpenAI’s Revenue and Competitive Strategy

Despite ChatGPT’s success, OpenAI is seeking new revenue streams due to the high costs associated with developing larger AI models. Entering the search market helps OpenAI counter Google’s dominance. Google has responded with its own AI developments, such as Gemini, integrating the technology into its commercial offerings, including search.

Challenges of Competing in AI Search

Richard Socher, CEO of You.com, highlights the difficulty of creating a superior search tool. Socher notes that OpenAI’s shift from developing artificial general intelligence to commercial ventures will bring its own set of challenges.
